Lunch, certainly not naked

Guru Bob and I caught up for lunch on friday, a fairly regular thing since we both work in the CBD.

Once we’d choose a different eatery each time, but now we stick with a great noshing place up a narrow, cobbled, crooked lane way in Melbourne that should lead to an opium den but instead reveals the ‘Dainty Sichuan Food’, and having eaten there – that word ‘Dainty’, I do not think it means what you think it means.
So each week we are working our way through the menu.

If you get there between 12.30 and 1.30 PM it also has the advantage of turning into Asian babe central. I think we can all agree you can never have too much spicy food or being surrounded by Asian babes eating spicy food. Another reason we keep going back is we see stuff people have ordered and we try to order it going on the names. Up till now that has being pretty hit and miss. This time as well as the usual menu they also gave us one of the novices menus which includes pictures of each of the the dishes.

This week it was:
• ‘cumin pork spare ribs’ – our must always have when we go,
• ‘ants climbing the hill’ which was surprisingly free of ants, and

• pork slice hot pot, and when they say hot pot they mean in spice, not temperature.

We then headed up to catch ‘Watchmen’ on IMAX but that’s a topic for another post.

  1. Naked Lunch. lol. The ONE use for cockroach killer that didn’t cross my mind. Haven’t seen that for YEARS.Have you seen Hardware?.Lunch looks yum. My favourite ‘restaurant’ in Un Zud is one called Apsara, in Dunedin. It’s a Cambodian joint. The other is the Khmer food too. Bit spicy for me, but yum too. It’s a lot like Thai. Guess that’s the influence. Cambodian is different tho.

  2. MokoI loved ‘Hardware’ got the song from the soundtrack stuck in my head now.“..this is what you want, this is what you get….Did you know its based on a 2000 AD comic called SHOK! Walter’s Robo-Tale.I spent ages trying to find where in the “no flesh shall be spared” quote was in the bible, because it sure anywhere I can find it.

  3. Nah, I didn’t now that. It’s about the destruction of the obscene temples in Jerusalem and trials of Judea.Mark 13: 14 But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains:15 And let him that is on the housetop not go down into the house, neither enter therein, to take any thing out of his house:16 And let him that is in the field not turn back again for to take up his garment.17 But woe to them that are with child, and to them that give suck <>[lol on the tit I think]<> in those days!18 And pray ye that your flight be not in the winter.19 For in those days shall be affliction, such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be.20 And except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved: but for the elect’s sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days.

  4. I think MARK 13 was the name of the robot.

  5. Mark 13 certainly was, its just in the movie they referenced it in the movie as “no flesh shall be spared”and of course I saw it. It was post-apocalyptic.

  6. Niiiiice. Yay for Asian babes and yummy food!

  7. Morning Mr Barnes.I’ve read mixed reviews on the Watchmen. What was you take on it?

  8. Bob looks thinner. How?

  9. Maybe that’s how they translate it in the future. lolThere’s bucket loads of alternative translations. It could be taken a ‘spared’. Sounds cooler too.

  10. JB – thanks heaps – I think was Barnes’ special camera lens… We are trying for the Homer Simpson chilli induced hallucinations at the Dainty Sichuan restaurant – so far no luck, but that last one was basically amazingly tender pork floating in a sea of chillis – Watchmen looked pretty weird and amazing afther that feed – especially the enormous naked blue man – was that a hallucination or actually in the movie??? The Asian babes (and there were a lot of them) were actually ordering and eating more food than Barnes and myself. Scary stuff!

  11. sounds like you guys had a good time, would have loved to be there with you. Much better than being here…..

  12. It looks like you guys have some really nice restaurants down there. What kind of restaurant is it, exactly? Indian? Kalamazoo is pretty much limited to Indian, Japanese or Chinese (other than American cheeseburger joints and the like).

  13. What kind of restaurantmainly asian dishes, heavy on the spicy – see Cumin Spare Ribs above mmmmmm spare ribsChazfh always welcome you know.

  14. Chinese food from the Sichuan province -a ccording to Anthony Bourdain on his recent visit to Melbourne – this place is supposed to be better than most restaurants in Sichuan province. More info here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Szechuan_cuisine

  15. Well??? Where is your Watchmen post?

  16. theredhead is obviously talking to you GuruBob.where’s your watchman review?

  17. Next time pls include a few photos of the Hot Asian Babes to go along with the menu – or if they are on the menu, a photo of that will suffice.ThanksL

  18. Lerm – the babes only had eyes for their food…

  19. What Lerm said. That spare rib dish sounds great. Gonna have to visit Chinatown again. Hmmm. Dixon St, Covent Garden for a beer, down to the pubs in Ultimo.

  20. Looks a stellar feed. I miss proper food. NZ attempts at anything with spice or character (Asian, Indian, Meditteranean) is like they’ve made a photocopy of proper food – looks vaguely similar but that’s about as far as it goes. They do lamb shanks well here, though. Surprisingly enough.
